Evolution of a relief map

{Thursday ~ Post Number Three}
Assignment...create a 3D relief map of the state
of Idaho, complete with labels and appropriate colors.
~~~
Don't let that beautiful lump of playdoh in the bowl above fool you.
Three containers of salt met their death before the cook gave up on the
provided salt dough recipe and instead made the never fails playdoh recipe
from years past.
Lay an image of Idaho upside down on flattened playhoh.
From here on out, the work was done by Ryan (and
Emma, since she had to make a relief map of her own since
Ryan and I were having so much fun!)
Cut around the image, lay the board
on top, and very carefully flip over your
Idaho sandwich! Discover that it's crooked on the board.
make another sandwich with the board, the state, and the rolling mat. Flip it back over...reposition...and flip it over (hopefully) one more time.
Begin by drawing the rivers, digging out the lakes, build up the moutains,
dig out the canyons.
Best tools...toothpick and a Tupperware orange peeler.
Take a break to go to Scouts.
Cover completely...not done yet!
Label all cities, rivers, lakes, mountain ranges.
Seven were required...all of the rest are extra credit.
Remember to come back later and sweep up all of the
little bits of toothpick off the floor.
Give your left over play doh to your five-uear-old sister who
is sad that she doesn't have this assignment. She makes her own relief map, complete with
a gas station.
~
Not pictured...let it dry three days. Do not, I repeat, do not knock
it over with a light saber!
~
Paint!
(Best place to buy Tempura paint? Micheals: $1.50 for a large
bottle. Everywhere else: $4.50 for the same bottle. Important
when three colors are required.)
Smile because it's all done...and your mom is still (mostly) sane!
(A couple of close-ups to show the detail.
We decided the spots of white showing through added
a bit of character...it was really hard to get every single spot
filled in with paint!)
Final step...think fondly on the future when, in four years,
you'll have to do this again!
